Death has never been more fun!
I’m a big fan of Supernatural so this was very much up my alley. Nick Holleran has escaped death, and as a result, he can now see all the ghoulish things that live invisibly among us. Ghosts, demons, fallen angels… Nick can see them all. Because of this, he shifts his PI business towards the strange and supernatural.
Nick now must take on a case investigating the ghost of the man who tried to kill him five years before. What does this ghost want, and does he want to finish the job?
Green builds a world that’s both familiar and new. Hell exists, and it’s here on earth. I love how Nick can interact with a world that’s invisible to us. Hell being on earth is an interesting concept, and given the world as it is today, perhaps it’s not so unbelievable.
Nick Holleran is a likable character and makes for an engaging narrator. He’s easy to root for and explains the world around him in a way that is clear and immersive. I also like how he’s aware heaven exists, and his decisions are shaped by this. Therefore, he tries to convince himself the reason he wants to “expunge” this ghost isn’t because of revenge as he knows revenge is a sin.
There are some great action scenes where Nick faces off with the monsters of Hell and we are introduced to his friends and acquaintances, some of whom are ghosts, which added to the interesting world-building.
This is a novella, so the story is short, but packs a punch. Green can develop characters and world-building within a short space of time, immersing you immediately into the plot of the story.
I highly recommend reading this one, which you can read within a short space of time.
I read this book as part of Hell In Haven: Holleran Case Files – 5 Complete Cases – Paranormal Investigator Series but I will be reviewing each story separately.
